Other people's orchards
I started putting these brief appreciations of other
people's orchards with pictures up in June 2007, started with Burrow
Hill and Sheppey's, just added Hartley Wintney community orchard, more
will follow.
On our
travels we always seek out orchards. Sadly, many have become
unprofitable due to cheap imports and unjust
trade (scroll down page to 'not on the Label' review) by supermarkets, and been
grubbed out.
Others that used to be open to the public are no longer open. Happily,
the west country still has a few cider orchards you can be visit for
tasting and sales. Here are a few pictures which I hope to add to as
time goes by. If you have any digital pictures of attractive orchards,
or have an orchard but no web site of your own, I will post up to 6
pictures and some text on a page in this section of my site, for free
as a service to the apple. Contact me in an email (no attachments or
images in the first instance) on hayes373(at)btinternet(dot)com and if
I like your pictures I will put them on the site together with your
text and links about the orchard and an acknowledgement. This includes
English commercial orchards who would like a little free advert. Of
course a return link would be appreciated but is not compulsory.
PS, I just tried using Google Earth to plot routes betweeen orchards,
it's amazing! If you find Sheppy's near Bradford on Tone, you can see
the orchards and individual trees from above, quite amazing. If you put
Burrow Hill and Bradford on Tone in the appropriate boxes, you get a
road map and travel directions between the two orchards. Click
below to virtually visit these orchards.
