Here (click on the above link, I hope it works!) is a short video tutorial about saddle grafting, a very easy technique to acquire with a little practice which can enable you to raise your own apple trees or graft over established trees to a differnet variety.

stock? Is there any merit in this?

Hi John. no, I have never grafted same variety scion to same variety stock and I can see no merit in it.

If you think about it, since there are only a few limited stocks in common use (MM106, M27. M26, MM111, M25 are the best known) to do this you would basically have to chop a bit off a tree and then graft in back on again. no point.

The reason beind grafting is that the actual clonal variety (the scion) will not grow reliably. The root stocks will grow reliably, hence the scion is grafted on to the stock.

These are very helpful videos! Thank you for doing them. Can you do a video showing how you sharpen your pruners (I believe you called them secateurs)?
